I had encounters with pairs in Louisiana and Florida in 2006 and 2007, and I am confident that the very capable team in Arkansas had sightings. It seems highly unlikely that a bird, which had survived in barely detectable numbers for 100 years, would suddenly go extinct not long after being observed in three locations.

@@IBWOvids What do you think is necessary to achieve a good sighting? Good luck? More people trying to find it? Better teams? Is it that there has been an area a little further away from the last sighting?

Persistence, determination, focus, and, most of all, luck.

I moved back to Virginia in 2013 after going five years without any further sightings. I still return for brief visits every year. I heard a double knock a few years ago. Tantalizing, but not a sure sign.

During the past 40+ years, I have witnessed gradual changes toward the situation that you are describing.

I had the exact opposite view 40+ years ago while surrounded by extraordinary academics at MIT, but things have changed over the years.

It boils down to the fact that, after becoming entrenched in the position that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is extinct, critics have defended that position rather than seeking the truth.

@IBWOvids My grandparents had a farm near Charity where I spent a lot of time as a kid. I remember hiking through those woods and finding the reminents of old stills. Broken glass, shotgun shells and brass from spent rounds. Looked like someone had some "excitement" around there long ago.

It's a natural bayou and navigable to various points, depending on boat size and water level. After Katrina, it was blocked for anything larger than a kayak or canoe at a point just below the location where I had a series of encounters in 2006. Further up the bayou, there was more and more obstruction. In 2007, I broke my arm during a fall when trying to drag a large branch out of the way.

@@IBWOvids Thank you for your reply. I've been a fan of the ivory bill since it's rediscovery in my a home state back in 2004. My grandfather called them the "Lord God Bird". I am unsure if he ever saw one in his life. I "stumbled" onto your channel a week or so ago via a recommendation from RUclips. I can't beleive how enjoyable your overhead drone videos (with sound!) are of the Pearl River basin. To me the scenery as well as the wild life sounds are as soothing as they are intresting. 👍 I am hoping one day soon your drone with catch an Ivory Bill in fligt at or just above the tree tops. Thank you for sharing these as well as your kayak search adventures with us as you search for this elusive bird. 👍 On a different note, knowing the mosquitoes in the bayous are very bad, what repellant (specifically) do you use to keep them at bay?

I rarely use repellant. I have taken DEET on trips to the Amazon (where malaria may be present) and Canada (where flies can be awful in the summer), but I rarely use it. I don't use it in the Pearl River swamp.

I agrree.I had a similar experience as a close encounter with a red tailed hawk.Huge in person up close especially with their wings extended.Same thing with a red headed pecker.

There is a statue of Mary Ingles down the road from the police station toward the river. It could be that the pillars are near that area, but I don't know the names of landmarks in the area.

To the north of Alaska in the Arctic Ocean. Pancake ice is an early stage of ice that forms as winter sets in. Months later, this area was covered in solid ice.

Cold and salty and probably not very tasty.

These are ocean surface waves like the ones you would see at the beach but with one difference: only long waves (unlike small ripples) can propagate through the pancake ice.

My hometown, too, but we moved away in 1965.

I lived in that area from 1958 until early in 1965. I fell through the ice at the reservoir when I was little. Lucky it was near enough to a dock that my older sister was able to pull me out.

I heard a double knock there last year. So it might still be there. If you want to see that video of English Bayou at its best, I would recommend the 4K viewing option on a large monitor.

On a good size computer screen. If you're trying to watch it on a phone, that would not be good. The bird is in the right half of the screen and it crosses the bayou.
